Founded in 1959

The Geological Engineering Department of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at Padjadjaran University (formerly FIPPA) was officially inaugurated at the beginning of the academic year 1959/1960 by the Dean of FIPPA Unpad, Major General (Ret.) Prof. Dr. R. Moestopo (late). However, lectures in geological science for the first 13 students began only in early 1960, thanks to the efforts of Prof. Dr. Sartono.

At its inception, there were no examples of rocks, let alone laboratory equipment. Yet, in such a simple setting, it is important to note the noble aspirations of the late Dr. Moh. Koesmono, who in 1963, through a letter from the President of Unpad dated February 7, 1963, number: 280/A/12/1963, planned to change the status of the Geological Department of FIPPA Unpad to the Faculty of Geology Unpad.

Initially, the Geological Department of Unpad consisted of two departments: the Department of Petrology and Mineralogy, and the Department of Stratigraphy and Paleontology. Later in its development, it transformed into the Department of Exploration Geology and the Department of Geological Engineering.
